Who is Island Baptist Church?
Island Baptist Church was born from a 1970’s vision of Brother Young, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Port Isabel. His vision was for missionary work here on the island. From the mid-1970’s to 1984, people met in local homes, to fellowship, pray, and study God’s Word. They grew in number and shaped the vision for a church on the island. Construction began in June of 1984, and groups of men throughout Texas came to help with the construction of the building. The church opened on March 10, 1985.
In 1982, we began offering meals and a meeting place for Baptist Student University students who came to the island for Spring Break. Each year, these students come to witness to other students. This ministry has continued to grow to its current level of around 1,500 students across a two-week period each year.
Our church provides a place for believers to grow in fellowship with one another by studying God’s Word and serving our community. To enable us to serve our community, we have an active benevolence ministry including two food pantries, one at the church and one at the Laguna Heights Center. We also continue to support the Beach Reach ministry during Spring Break which shares the gospel of Jesus Christ with college students. We desire to live out God’s command to love Him, each other, and our neighbors. We strive to worship and follow Jesus Christ through our words and lives.
